Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. (E3) has been selected by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA – E) to receive a $595,000 grant through PERFORM, the Performance-based Energy Resource Feedback, Optimization, and Risk Management program. E3 will partner with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to develop E3’s RESERVE modeling tool into a publicly available software program and demonstrate the use of machine learning in the dynamic calculation of ancillary services requirements. This tool will also allow CAISO to assess levels of solar and wind that can be dispatched flexibly to meet ancillary service needs. The project proposes to enable more efficient grid operations and improve the utilization of renewable resources, reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions. If successful, the tool will be customizable for other grid operators.
